Walking the Streets of Prague

In Old Town

(In Old Town)

Walk around Prague long enough – okay, not even that long – and you will come across many…well, let’s say interesting sights. And sounds. And smells. The whole gamut of the senses, in fact. It is a great city for walking, strolling, ambling aimlessly, and I guarantee that if you wander down enough of this beautiful city’s streets and avenues and quaint alleyways, what you discover on foot will be not only the usual guidebook stuff but plenty of the strange, the offbeat, the head-scratchingly bizarre and sometimes just plain weird, so much so that you might start to question the mental state of the Czech people in general. At the very least you will come to the conclusion, as we did, that the Czechs have a penchant for the different and a sensibility that is decidedly not mainstream American.

Autumn in Washington

Simply brilliant

You can get into all kinds of debates over the seasons and which is the best.

I think we can quickly write off winter as most people’s favorite season, unless maybe you’re a diehard skier or just like being cold all the time and watching your heating bills skyrocket. Or, if you live in western Washington like I do, there’s the endless days/weeks/months of gray and twenty-seven different types of rain ranging from drizzle-mist to downpours. So, winter? No, not the best.

Prague Castle overlooks the city and the Vltava River from its hilltop location, dominating the skyline of the western half of Prague. The castle is immense and views of it are inescapable from just about any vantage point in Prague.

Prague Castle overview

(Prague Castle overview)

No less an authority than the Guiness Book of World Records lists Prague Castle as the largest ancient castle in the world. It spans 570 meters in length (that’s more than six football fields for the Americans reading this) and averages around 130 meters wide, encompassing an area of nearly 70,000 square meters. This translates to approximately 700,000 square feet!
